A Few Examples of the Benefits of Sports Psychology | JohnFMurray.com

Hello from Dr. John F. Murray, licensed clinical and sports psychologist in Palm Beach, Florida. Call me a peak performance coach if you will, but it is much more than that too. I work from my Florida office, at your site, and by phone or skype, and the goal is usually to either enhance performance in business or sports and/or improve well-being and overall life satisfaction.

My clients come from all walks of life but share a common theme – a high demand challenge and the need for high performance. They range from pro golfers to NFL teams, amateur tennis players to sales managers and executive teams, pro tennis players to amateur golfers and aspiring soccer stars, NBA players and referees to junior equestrians, day traders and investors to high school and college baseball players, gymnastics teams to CEOs and brokers, NBA basketball and junior hockey teams … the list goes on … really anyone needing a strong mind, goals, confidence, focus, great resilience, management of emotions and more. It’s exciting work for both of us, and each person, team or organization is unique. Call me at 561-596-9898 to discuss further and set up the initial evaluation. And all our work is 100% confidential.

Below is some media that I have received over the past few years demonstrating the immense value and range of issues involved in training the mind, sports psychology, and clinical psychology. This is just the iceberg and some examples documented in the media. It is on 1/1000 of the issues!

Pro Hockey Performance Enhancement: NHL Star Olli Jokinen discusses his sports psychology work with Dr. John F Murray in The Province.

Sports Retirement Coping: ESPN.com talks with Dr. Murray about sports retirement. Look no further than the Junior Seau suicide to realize that athletes often need counseling after their careers end.

Football Team Performance Assessment: Individuals benefit but so do teams. In this article in Yahoo Sports, Dr. Murray discusses the use of his trademarked Mental Performance Index in evaluating the most recent Super Bowl win by the Giants. The Miami Hurricanes main publication also publishes Dr. John F Murray’s MPI reports in a weekly column throughout the season. Needless to say, understanding how a team or athlete performs is key to helping. The MPI is described here and The Union Leader discusses the MPI here in discussing the New England Patriots.

Tennis Anger Management: Anger in tennis is discussed in this New Zealand Herald article as it refers to Dr. Murray’s comments about John McEnroe.

More Serious Clinical Psychology Issues: Sometimes the issues are more serious, and Dr. Murray can handle them too as a licensed psychologist in Florida. For example, The Voice of Russia Radio recently had Dr. Murray on to discuss Borderline Personality Disorder. You can hear the interview at the link.

Societal Resistance and Evolution: Sports psychology is still a relatively new field and profession, so many do not know about it or still live by old standards, such as thinking that it is a sign of weakness to talk with a professional rather than act out or just bury it. In The Mental Performance Index book Dr. Murray discusses his “Tough Guys Talk” initiative and you can read it word by word here. It is a good message for anyone who might feel embarrassed or ashamed of going to talk with someone about problems. The book is available too at this link at Amazon.com.

Sports Psychology Educational Issues: Helping the new crop of sports psychologists is another goal of Dr. Murray in helping overall in society to have more providers. In this article about what it took to become a sports psychologist Dr. Murray helps people seeking to gain entry into this exciting field.

Pro Tennis Performance Enhancement: In this article, tennis pro Wayne Odesnik talks about how working with Dr. Murray on the mental game has helped him. But not all players have to be world class pros like Odesnik. In the LA Times Examiner, Rich Neher wrote a review of Dr. Murray’s book Smart Tennis and the title alone of this article will convince you that mental coaching is for all levels of athletes, and critically important. And while we are on tennis, be sure to see the front page story on Smart Tennis and mental coaching that appeared in Canada’s biggest tennis magazine called Groundstrokes.

In Sum: So that was just to whet the appetite. There is so much more that solid and informed mental coaching, sports psychology, and clinical psychology can offer the client no matter what he or she is doing. Or if it is a client team or organization needing to stay a step ahead of its rivals it works just as well. There is overwhelming evidence in 2012 that sports psychology and mental coaching works, and those without it are at a distinct disadvantage.
